Energy at Home

Homes are responsible for almost 25% of the energy use in Ireland. While energy is essential for running our homes there are numerous ways we can make existing homes more energy efficient and have energy efficiency designed into homes that have not been built yet.

Building Energy Rating

Building Energy Rating tells you how efficient your home is on a scale of A to G. The rating is based on calculating heat loss through your building fabric and ventilation and how much energy is used for space heating, water heating and lighting

BER can be used to determine the best and most cost effective way of making homes energy efficient. It facilitates the prioritisation of improvement activities based on calculated expected improvement and cost associated with carrying out that improvement. It removes the “educated guessing” from identifying issues that are causing heat loss and replaces it with a systematic, logical approach.

Homes that have received planning permission since January 2007 require a BER certificate. All homes for sale or rent from January 2009 will require BER certificates.

New Homes

New homes can be rated from plans during the design stage and we strongly recommend this approach. Many decisions affecting the energy performance of a house are taken early in the design process for example the orientation of the building, the size, location and number of windows, all of which will have an influence on the rating of your home. There are a number of other very important factors that can influence the energy performance and rating of your building during the construction stage.
